How long each policy lasts

The 50-country policy does not all expire at the same date — this is the part most travellers get wrong:

The rule airlines check before you board

Check-in staff — not Chinese immigration — are the first gate. They verify your passport against the current list and will deny boarding if they apply an outdated rule. Print or save the NIA announcement for your nationality and show it if challenged.

Related questions

Will the 30-day visa-free policy be extended past 31 December 2026?

Unknown as of September 2026. Every previous extension was announced only a few weeks before expiry, so re-check this page or en.nia.gov.cn before booking travel in December 2026 or later.

How is the 30-day stay counted?

From midnight (00:00) of the day after your date of entry. Entering on the 1st means your 30 days run to the 30th, with exit on or before that day.

Can I visit China twice on the visa-free policy?

Yes, there is no limit on the number of visa-free entries, but immigration officers can refuse entry if they suspect you are living in China on back-to-back tourist entries. Frequent re-entries with short gaps may trigger questioning.

Does the US or India have visa-free entry to China?

No. US and Indian passport holders are not on the 50-country list, but US citizens can use the 240-hour visa-free transit if continuing to a third country. Indian citizens have no visa-free option and need a standard visa.

Can I work or study on visa-free entry?

No. Only business meetings, tourism, family visits, exchange and transit are permitted. Employment, study and journalism require the appropriate visa obtained before travel.

Do I need to show an onward ticket for 30-day visa-free entry?

The 30-day unilateral policy does not formally require an onward ticket, but airlines may still ask for proof of onward travel at check-in. For the 240-hour transit route, a confirmed onward ticket to a third country is mandatory.
