From the developer

"I built ChinaPass for the parts of a China trip that no guidebook covers: linking a foreign card, queueing for the Forbidden City with a passport, ordering food from a QR menu. It runs offline, needs no account, and tells you what actually works today."

Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions about ChinaPass

Do I need a Chinese phone number to use ChinaPass?

No. ChinaPass works without a Chinese phone number, without registration and without an account. Guides, the phrasebook and offline translation are bundled in the app.

Does ChinaPass work offline?

Yes. Guides, the phrasebook and the booking cards are stored on your device and update as an offline content package. Only the optional web-page translation and content updates need a connection.

How do foreigners book the Forbidden City?

Book on the official international site of the Palace Museum, intl.dpm.org.cn, with the passport you will carry. Tickets — including the Treasure Gallery and Clock Gallery — go on sale 7 days ahead at 20:00 Beijing time (ticket.dpm.org.cn), and you enter with that same passport; there is no paper ticket. The museum is closed on Mondays, except public holidays.

Can I pay in China with a foreign card?

Yes. You can link most overseas cards to Alipay or WeChat Pay and pay by QR code. ChinaPass walks through the card-linking flow step by step, including what to do when the card is rejected.

Does ChinaPass collect my data?

No. ChinaPass has no advertising, no analytics and no tracking SDKs, and requires no account. Camera, photos and microphone are used only when you start an on-device translation or read-aloud.

Is ChinaPass available on iOS?

ChinaPass ships for Android first, with a direct APK download from this site; an iOS app is in development. Meanwhile every guide, city page and booking step on this site works in any mobile browser.
