Can You Drink Tap Water in China? What Visitors Should Know
Short answer
No — don't drink tap water in mainland China. It is treated at the plant, but old pipes and rooftop storage tanks mean it isn't potable as delivered. Tap water is fine for brushing your teeth and becomes safe after a rolling boil. Bottled water is everywhere and cheap (¥1–3 for a 550 ml bottle), and every hotel room has a kettle.
What tap water is safe for
- Brushing your teeth: fine. Nobody skips this, including locals.
- Washing food you will peel (fruit you'll peel yourself, vegetables): fine.
- Drinking after a rolling boil: safe — this is exactly what the hotel kettle and every office water dispenser are for.
- Drinking straight from the tap: no. Locals don't do it either; hot-water culture exists partly for this reason.
Bottled water: brands and prices
A 550 ml bottle from a convenience store or supermarket runs ¥1.5–3 — roughly a third of Western European prices. Large 1.5 L bottles cost only marginally more. You can also buy 24-bottle shrink-wrapped cases in supermarkets for hotel stays.
In rural areas, small towns, or at trailheads, buy sealed bottles rather than refilling — that is the only real rule to remember.

Your hotel room
- Every mid-range and above hotel provides an electric kettle. Use it freely — boiling tap water for tea or filling a bottle after it cools is normal practice.
- Most hotels also leave two complimentary bottles of water per day; four- and five-star hotels are generous with this. If the room runs out, the front desk provides more, usually free.
- High-end hotels sometimes have filtered or 'drinking water' taps in rooms. Fine to use — but when in doubt, the kettle and bottled water are the safe default.
Hot water is everywhere — and free
- Airports, railway stations, and trains have free hot-water dispensers (开水/热水). Bring a bottle and refill — on trains this is a universal habit, not a hack.
- Restaurants serve hot tea or hot water by default, and it is free. Cold water at restaurants is usually bottled or filtered — served chilled, not from the tap.
- Asking for '热水' (rè shuǐ, hot water) gets you a free refill at almost any shop, train, or office lobby.
Ice, salads, and street food
- Chain restaurants, coffee shops (Starbucks, Luckin, Manner), and hotel restaurants use filtered water and commercial ice — their iced drinks are fine.
- At street vendors and very small local eateries, iced drinks are the one thing worth being cautious about; sealed bottled drinks are the safe fallback.
- Rinse-in-tap-water salads at budget restaurants are a mild risk the same way they are in most of Asia — your call on how adventurous to be.
