Does WhatsApp Work in China? The 2026 Answer for Visitors
Short answer
No — WhatsApp is blocked on mainland China networks (hotel Wi-Fi, local SIM cards, public hotspots — all of it), for messaging as well as voice and video calls. It works normally in Hong Kong and Macao. The reliable, compliant way to keep using it on a visit: international roaming from your home carrier, or a travel eSIM whose data routes through overseas lines. Set everything up before you fly.
What's blocked and what works on local networks
The blocking applies to every connection type on the mainland: hotel Wi-Fi, café Wi-Fi, office networks, and any SIM card bought in China. Hong Kong and Macao have no such restrictions — WhatsApp and Google all work normally there, including on cross-boundary trips from Shenzhen or Zhuhai.

The two reliable, compliant ways to keep WhatsApp
- International roaming from your home carrier: your data exits through your home network, so WhatsApp, Google and everything else behave as if you never left. The catch is price — typically US$5–12 per day on US and European carriers.
- A travel eSIM for China: data-only, but it connects to local 5G while routing your traffic through overseas lines, so blocked services work out of the box. A 10 GB / 15-day plan typically costs US$10–20 — far cheaper than roaming. Our eSIM comparison page lists what to check before buying.
- Both are ordinary consumer data services. What you should not plan around: unauthorized VPN tools used to circumvent national network controls — that violates Chinese regulations, and free/unknown VPN apps also carry real data-theft risk. Skip them; the two options above are simpler and reliable.
Set these up before you fly
- Install and update WhatsApp before departure — it is no longer on the China App Store, and if your Apple ID region is set to China you can't download it there at all.
- Register WeChat before arrival: new accounts need an existing user to verify you, which is much easier while you can still message your contact freely.
- If you use a travel eSIM, install the QR profile and turn on data roaming for it before boarding — activation on landing then takes 2–5 minutes.
- Download offline Google Maps areas (or install Amap) — map apps are the other thing people miss on day one.
WhatsApp calls and video calls
- Voice and video calls work over roaming or a travel eSIM — call quality just tracks your data speed, and 4G/5G in Chinese cities is excellent.
- On local mainland connections (Chinese SIM, hotel Wi-Fi), calls do not connect at all — the block covers calls, not just messages.
- Many travelers keep WhatsApp for family back home and add WeChat for anything local — guides, drivers, hotels, and anyone Chinese you meet. The two coexist without friction.

No. Hotel networks are part of the mainland internet and the block applies equally. Only roaming or a travel eSIM keeps it working.
Can I download WhatsApp inside China?
Not from the China App Store — Apple removed WhatsApp and Threads there in April 2024 at the government's request. Install and update it before you fly. Android users should also sideload updates beforehand if their account region is China.
Can I make WhatsApp voice and video calls in China?
