Does Google Maps work in China?

Short answer

Google Maps will often load, but in mainland China its business data is thin and its coordinates use a different datum from local maps, so pins and walking directions drift. Use a local map app for street-level navigation and keep offline maps as a backup.

Why the pins land in the wrong place

Mainland map data uses a coordinate system that is offset from the one used internationally. Local apps correct for it; international apps often do not. The result is a pin that is a block or two away, which is exactly the error that makes you miss a turnstile or a restaurant entrance.

On an international eSIM or roaming connection it often loads, but treat it as a rough overview, not a walking guide.

Amap has an English interface and covers transport, walking and indoor malls.

How do I tell a driver where to go?

Show the address in Chinese characters. It is the single most reliable input, and hotel cards exist for exactly this.
