💳 Alipay + WeChat Pay

Bind overseas card

Alipay + WeChat Pay

Reviewed 2026-09-08

Step by step

  1. Open Alipay & verify identity

Register with your passport and finish real-name verification first — it is required before adding any card.

    Use Alipay

  2. Add your card

Me → Bank Cards → “+”. Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, Discover and JCB are accepted.

    Add card

  3. Verify

A small charge + SMS code confirms the card. Transactions over ¥200 carry a ~3% service fee (under ¥200 is free).

    Verify

  4. Do the same in WeChat

WeChat → Me → Services → Wallet → Cards. Now both pay by QR.

    Open WeChat

Good to know

Universal fallbacks: carry ¥300–500 cash · let the merchant scan YOUR code · show the phrase cards below. Tap-to-pay needs no Chinese number; international SMS works for verification.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a service fee?

Transactions over ¥200 carry a ~3% service fee. Under ¥200 is free.

Are there spending limits?

Yes — international cards have per-transaction and annual limits set by the card networks. Check them under Me → Bank Cards.

Do I need a Chinese phone number?

No. Registration and SMS verification work with your international number.

Which cards are accepted?

Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, Discover and JCB. Acceptance can vary by issuer.

Where can I withdraw cash with a foreign card?

Bank ATMs showing a Visa/Mastercard/UnionPay logo — Bank of China is the most foreign-card friendly (English prompts); airport arrivals halls have them. Limits: about ¥2,500–5,000 per transaction, ~¥10,000/day, plus a ¥20–30 ATM fee and your bank's fee. Always choose to be charged in CNY (decline the machine's currency conversion). 4-digit PIN? Try adding 00 in front.

If something goes wrong

declined

Payment failed / card declined

Likely cause: Your home bank blocks cross-border wallet transactions by default, or 3-D Secure is off. Debit and prepaid cards fail more often than credit cards.

What to do: Call your bank: ask them to allow Alipay / WeChat Pay transactions and enable 3-D Secure, then retry (some banks take up to 24h). Still failing → try another card; Wise/Revolut-type cards often work. Your name must match the passport machine-readable zone exactly.

vpn-blocked

Binding or paying fails only while your VPN is on

Likely cause: The VPN IP makes the request look like it comes from another country — risk control kicks in.

What to do: Turn the VPN off while binding a card or paying, then retry on mobile data or local Wi-Fi.

passport-scan-failed

Passport scan / identity verification keeps failing

Likely cause: Glare on the passport page, or the passport is valid for less than 6 months.

What to do: Rescan on a dark, matte surface and avoid reflections. Passport expiring soon? Renew it before the trip.

limit-reached

Large payments fail (around ¥35,000 / $5,000)

Likely cause: Since Mar 2024, international cards are capped at $5,000 per transaction and $50,000 per year (after passport verification).

What to do: Split the bill, pay at the merchant's card terminal, or bind a second international card. Check your limits under Me → Bank Cards.

personal-qr-rejected

Scanning a shop's QR code says foreign cards aren't supported

Likely cause: Foreign cards work with merchant codes only — not personal codes, transfers or red packets.

What to do: Show YOUR payment code and let the shop scan you — that almost always works. Otherwise pay cash.

fee-3-percent

A 3% fee appears on payments over ¥200

Likely cause: Standard international-card rule: free under ¥200, 3% on the full amount above (your bank's FX fee is separate).

What to do: Split into smaller payments, or use the merchant's POS terminal for big amounts. Refunds return the fee proportionally.

wechat-selfie-otp

WeChat selfie verification fails or the SMS code never arrives

Likely cause: Photo background/lighting, or your carrier blocks international short-code SMS.

What to do: Retake the selfie against a plain white wall, no glasses. No SMS? Ask your home carrier to enable international short-code SMS. Bind a credit card — debit/prepaid cards get rejected more.

wallet-topup

You're trying to top up your Alipay balance with a foreign card

Likely cause: Foreign cards can't load the wallet — that needs a Chinese bank account. (TourPass was discontinued in 2023; old guides are wrong.)

What to do: Skip the balance: pay directly by QR with your bound card. Really need a top-up? Ask a Chinese friend to transfer in, or use the in-app TourCard mini-program where available.

home-card-rejected

Every card from my home country is rejected — I can't add any card at all

Likely cause: Some countries' cards can't be used abroad at all: Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard stopped working outside Russia, Mir is not accepted in China, and only a couple of Russian banks still issue UnionPay cards that work here — and even those are unreliable. Retrying will not help; this is a sanctions issue, not an Alipay bug.

What to do: Switch to a cash-first plan. Bring USD or EUR cash and exchange it for RMB at the airport or a bank (ask for small notes — ¥100 bills are hard to break in small shops), and keep cash for places that don't take cards. If you also hold a card from a bank outside the affected country, bind that one to Alipay/WeChat before you fly — arranging it after landing is much harder.
