Can I use a Visa or Mastercard in China?

Short answer

Yes, but only in a narrow slice of places. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at international hotels, major department stores and airport shops. Small restaurants, convenience stores, taxis and most ticket counters run on Alipay or WeChat Pay, so the practical answer is: a foreign card works day to day only after you link it to a wallet.

Where a physical card works

Expect card acceptance at international hotel chains, high-end malls, airline counters and tourist-facing department stores in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Beyond that tier it drops sharply.

Why contactless alone will not get you through the trip

China's retail payments moved to QR codes on phones. A market stall, a noodle shop and a metro turnstile all expect you to scan, not to tap. Carrying only plastic means falling back on cash constantly.

Linking the same card to Alipay or WeChat Pay takes about five minutes with a passport and turns the card into something that works at those same stalls.

Should I get a UnionPay card instead?

Not necessary for a short trip. UnionPay is issued in many countries and is accepted more widely than Visa or Mastercard, but a foreign card linked to Alipay covers the same ground.

Are ATMs available for foreign cards?

Yes, at major bank branches and airports, though not every machine accepts foreign cards. Look for the Visa Plus or Mastercard Maestro mark, and withdraw during bank opening hours in case the machine keeps your card.

Will my bank block the transactions?

Sometimes. Set a travel notice before departure, and be ready to approve a push notification — many first payments in China are held until you confirm them.
