Canton Tower & Pearl River cruise
The 600 m 'slim waist' is the tallest tower in China, with a rooftop Ferris wheel and glass walkway more than 450 m up.
Tip You do not need to go up: a night cruise from Tianzi Pier after 20:00 shows both banks lit and costs far less.

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall & Shamian Island
The ancestral hall gathers Lingnan brick carving, woodwork and plasterwork in one compound, while Shamian is a whole island of colonial-era facades under banyan trees.
Tip The hall is quieter and better lit in the morning; do Shamian in the afternoon with coffee, then watch the sunset from Renmin Bridge.

What you need to know

- Museums closing on Mondays is the norm; the Guangdong Museum opens Tuesday-Sunday — mind the difference when comparing with the closing days of free museums in Beijing and Shanghai
