- Hongya Cave (洪崖洞民俗风貌区) is free to enter with no fixed closure day; when daily visitor numbers hit the ceiling on holidays, the authorities (the scenic area's WeChat account / Yuzhong District) publish a crowd-control notice and activate free reservations — on ordinary days just walk in.
- The online free-reservation channel is the WeChat official account 「洪崖洞」 (Hongya Cave); free entry means no ticket or ID requirement — only during crowd-control periods do you follow the announcement to reserve or follow on-site staff guidance.
- Jiefangbei pedestrian street (解放碑步行街) is open around the clock with no reservation; during extreme peaks such as New Year's Eve and Golden Week, nearby metro entrances and exits may be temporarily controlled.
- Paid viewing spots are operated independently: the WFC Huixianlou Observation Deck (WFC会仙楼观景台, the high-rise observation floor of Chongqing World Financial Center) and similar sites require separate tickets and are not bundled with the free districts.
- Foreign visitors: moving through the districts involves no ticket checks; if a reservation form doesn't accept passport numbers, ask on-site staff for manual registration — never pay third parties to book on your behalf.

This is real-name ticketing, not a date/time-slot reservation system; the bottleneck is queuing, not ticket supply. Online buying via the official WeChat account runs in parallel with on-site staffed windows and self-service machines — the staffed window is the fallback for foreign visitors.
What you need to know
- Opening hours (as published on the Chongqing municipal government website): peak season (Mar 1–Oct 31) 7:30–22:30, off season (Nov 1–end of Feb) 7:30–21:30, with a 22:30 close on all national public holidays.
- North Station: 151 Xinhua Road, Yuzhong District (about 20 m from Exit 5B of Xiaoshizi Station on metro lines 1/6); South Station: Shangxin Street, Nan'an District; the one-way crossing over the Yangtze takes about 4 minutes.
- Ticket channels: on-site staffed windows and self-service machines, the official 「长江索道」 (Yangtze River Cableway) WeChat account, and authorized OTAs (Ctrip 携程 / Tongcheng 同程); during holidays the operator has opened reservation-based ticketing, extended operating hours, and added holiday night express buses.
- Queues in peak season often exceed 1 hour: buy online first, then queue to board, and you skip the ticket-buying line. The cableway uses shuttle (back-and-forth) cabins with fixed capacity; crowds are relatively light at opening in the morning and before the last departure at night.
- Foreign visitors: self-service machines mostly read Chinese ID cards, so buy at the on-site staffed window with your passport; if online channels won't accept a passport number, the staffed window is the authoritative fallback.

Chongqing's top sights are mostly free and open, with less booking pressure than Beijing or Shanghai; the mechanism hurdles concentrate in holiday crowd-control notices and real-name ticketing channels. The city also sits in the 240-hour visa-free transit zone.
What you need to know
- Chongqing is covered by the 240-hour visa-free transit policy (one of the original 19 provinces/regions/municipalities under Announcement No. 12 of 2024 by the National Immigration Administration); eligible countries expanded to 55 in June 2025. Travelers with a valid international travel document and a connecting ticket with a confirmed dated seat may stay visa-free for 240 hours and travel across provinces.
- Free entry plus holiday crowd control is the norm for this mountain city's sights: Hongya Cave and similar spots publish crowd-control notices and activate free reservations on holidays, but are essentially reservation-free on ordinary days — unlike the Forbidden City's 'no reservation, no entry' mechanism.
- Real-name requirements concentrate on paid attractions (Yangtze River Cableway / observation decks): the official WeChat account and authorized OTAs sell tickets on twin tracks, with on-site staffed windows as the fallback for foreign documents.
- The mountain-city terrain is itself a transport mechanism: metro stations and the attractions above ground are often a dozen-plus floors apart. The Liziba 'train through the building' viewing platform (about 1,367 m²) is built and open free of charge (official Yuzhong District government information); the Crown Grand Escalator (皇冠大扶梯) and Kaixuan Road Elevator (凯旋路电梯) are paid vertical transport, billed separately from the metro.
