Order inside Alipay or WeChat
Foreign cards fail more in the standalone DiDi app. Open the 滴滴出行 mini-program instead — no install, no new account: WeChat → top search bar → 滴滴出行, or Alipay home → search 滴滴出行. Payment rides on the card you already bound there.

Set the destination by POI
Pick your destination from the map suggestions, or paste a Chinese address copied from Booking/Trip.com. Typing English addresses often finds nothing.

Chat, don't call
Use the in-app chat — messages auto-translate. Calls go through a virtual number, so your foreign SIM doesn't matter.

Standing at the right spot
Drop the pin where you actually stand — hotel gates and landmark entrances are easiest for drivers to find.
Good to know
Universal fallbacks: ¥300–500 cash for street taxis · insist on the meter (打表) · show the phrase cards below.
If something goes wrong

The standalone DiDi app rejects your foreign card
What to do: Order through the Alipay/WeChat DiDi mini-program instead — payment rides on the card you already bound there. Street taxi? Insist on the meter and pay cash.
wrong-pickup
The driver calls and can't find you
Likely cause: Pin drift (map offset) or one-way streets put the car on the wrong side.
What to do: Drag the pin to where you actually stand, or walk to a landmark/hotel gate. Use the chat's auto-translation instead of a call.
driver-cancels
Drivers keep cancelling, or ask to pay off-app
Likely cause: Off-app cash deals dodge platform fees; cancels spike at rush hour and in rain.
What to do: Keep everything in-app so the trip stays insured and traceable — politely decline off-app deals and re-order. Complaints go through Help Center (English chat support).
amap-english-broken
Amap's English mode disappeared or search finds nothing
Likely cause: The language toggle can reset after app updates, and English search misses many local POIs.
What to do: Re-set it: Me → Settings → General → Language (or reinstall with your phone set to English). Search by pasting Chinese names, and navigate to “metro station + exit number” as your target.
