Dianchi Lake and the red-billed gulls
From November to March, tens of thousands of gulls arrive from Siberia to winter on the lake, and on Haigeng Dam you can feed them at arm's length.
Tip The gulls are most active between 8 and 10am; buy the official gull food rather than feeding bread or snacks.

The village rebuilds homes of 25 ethnic groups, while the Western Hills' Dragon Gate is a Daoist shrine and walkway chiselled into a cliff above the lake.
Tip Take the cable car up the Western Hills and walk down through the Dragon Gate; on a clear day the lake view is worth an extra half hour.
