Kunming Travel Guide: Stone Forest, Dianchi Gulls & How to Book

An eternal-spring plateau city with a flock of winter gulls

Kunming is the gateway to Yunnan: 1,900 m up, averaging around 15°C year-round, which is why it is called the Spring City. The Stone Forest is an hour east, tens of thousands of red-billed gulls fly into Dianchi Lake from November to March, and the city holds Asia's largest cut-flower market. Most people just transit here; it deserves two days — which also lets you acclimatise.

Limestone that lay under the sea 200 million years ago now stands as a forest of pillars — Yunnan's strangest landscape and a World Natural Heritage site.

TipThe park is large: take the shuttle to the Greater Stone Forest and walk from there. Independent travel avoids the shopping stops that coach tours build in.

Dianchi Lake and the red-billed gulls Walk-in

From November to March, tens of thousands of gulls arrive from Siberia to winter on the lake, and on Haigeng Dam you can feed them at arm's length.

TipThe gulls are most active between 8 and 10am; buy the official gull food rather than feeding bread or snacks.

The village rebuilds homes of 25 ethnic groups, while the Western Hills' Dragon Gate is a Daoist shrine and walkway chiselled into a cliff above the lake.

TipTake the cable car up the Western Hills and walk down through the Dragon Gate; on a clear day the lake view is worth an extra half hour.

🪨 Stone Forest scenic area

The Stone Forest sells real-name reserved tickets with a daily cap. The site is large and its districts are linked by sightseeing shuttles; prices and hours follow the official listing.

What you need to know

Tickets are real-name and reserved; passports work for registration. Peak season and holidays have daily caps, so book ahead
The park is big — normally take the shuttle to the Greater and Lesser Stone Forest and walk from there
Karst steps are uneven: wear grippy shoes. The UV is strong in summer, so bring a hat and sunscreen
It is about an hour from central Kunming; go by direct scenic bus, or high-speed rail to Shilin West and transfer
