Every major Chinese sight releases tickets on a fixed countdown, and the clocks differ: the Forbidden City opens bookings 7 days ahead at 20:00; the Terracotta Army 7 days ahead; Shaanxi History Museum 5 days ahead at 17:00; Tiananmen Square 1–7 days ahead; Suzhou museums 7 days at 08:00. Work backwards from your visit date, set an alarm for each release time, and book trains first (15-day presale) since sight dates cannot move around sold-out train times.
The release-time table
Times are Beijing time. Windows are what each operator published as of October 2026 — museums occasionally adjust them for holidays, so treat the official channel as the final word.
- Free museums follow the same release mechanics as paid ones — Shaanxi History Museum costs nothing and is among the hardest reservations in the country precisely because the cap, not the price, is the constraint.
- 'Rolling' release means tickets appear as inventory rather than one timed drop; booking early in the window still matters on holiday dates.

The booking order that avoids dead ends
- Lock the Forbidden City first — it has the tightest window and no same-day tickets, so every other date should flex around it.
- Book trains second: the 15-day presale means your sight dates must already be settled, and holiday trains sell out faster than museum slots return.
- Everything else — free museums, the Wall, parks — has enough capacity that booking a few days out is realistic outside Golden Week.
- Set a phone alarm for each release moment with the mini program already open and passenger details saved; the difference between getting in and missing out at 20:00 is usually under two minutes.
What to do when the drop is missed
- Check again after 22:00 the same evening: cancellations flow back into inventory, and some museums re-release unclaimed reservations.
- Shift one day rather than one attraction — adjacent weekdays have dramatically better availability than 2–4 October style holiday peaks.
- For the Forbidden City, the morning and afternoon sessions release together; if your date is gone entirely, the fallback is the neighbouring Beijing sights or a different day, never the scalper claiming to have 'internal tickets' — those do not exist.
- For free museums, returning foreigners' slots also reappear — worth two checks before giving up.
