What actually happens during the festival
- Mooncakes (月饼) appear in every bakery, hotel lobby and supermarket from August onward. They are dense, rich, and shared rather than eaten alone — gift boxes dominate because families and companies exchange them. Try one before committing to a box: flavors run from lotus paste and red bean to salted egg yolk, fresh-meat pork (a Jiangnan specialty that surprises everyone), and increasingly odd modern fillings.
- Moon-viewing (赏月) is the core ritual: families gather outdoors in the evening. For visitors, any waterfront or elevated terrace works — West Lake in Hangzhou, the Bund in Shanghai, Xi'an's city wall, and Beijing's Jingshan park are classic picks. No tickets or events are required; it is a do-it-yourself festival.
- Lanterns in some cities and temple fairs in others, plus tea houses doing extended evening service. Unlike Golden Week, museums and attractions keep normal hours and normal booking windows.
- Greetings you will hear: 中秋快乐 (Happy Mid-Autumn). Merchants may run short promotions — Mid-Autumn sales exist but are far tamer than Golden Week or Singles' Day.
