Qingdao Travel Guide: Zhanqiao Pier, Badaguan, Laoshan & How to Book
Red roofs, green trees, blue sea and a bag of fresh beer
Qingdao packs a German-era old town, a coastline and a Daoist mountain into an hour's drive: gulls at Zhanqiao Pier, a stroll through Badaguan's villas, a bag of unfiltered draft beer with spicy clams at noon, then Laoshan in the afternoon. Summer is high season but also the best of it; September is quieter with warm water.

Zhanqiao Pier & Badaguan Walk-in
The pier is Qingdao's emblem, its Huilan Pavilion facing the bay, while Badaguan is eight streets named after passes, lined with villas from a dozen countries.
TipThe pier is best early for gulls and sunrise; in Badaguan walk from Huashilou towards Taipingjiao and you will meet almost nobody.

Laoshan Book ahead
Billed as the finest mountain on the sea, it drops straight into the Yellow Sea, and Taiqing Palace is one of the ancestral temples of Daoism's Quanzhen school.
TipLaoshan is split into separate routes (Jufeng, Taiqing, Yangkou and more) and one day realistically covers one; Taiqing is easiest and Yangkou has the best sea views.

Xiaomai Island & Yandao Island sunsets Walk-in
Two small peninsulas reaching into the sea; at sunset the rocks and water turn orange and half the city shows up.
TipArrive an hour before sunset and bring a jacket — it is windy; the rocks are slippery, so do not edge out for the photo.

⛰️ Laoshan scenic area
Laoshan is split into several routes — Jufeng, Taiqing, Yangkou, Beijiushui and others — each ticketed separately with real-name reservations. Holidays have daily caps, so fix your route before buying.
What you need to know
- Each route has its own entrance and shuttle bus and one day realistically covers one — decide the route before purchasing
- Tickets are real-name and reserved; passports can be used to register. Peak season and holidays have daily caps that sell out
- The summit and the coast are windy with a sharp temperature drop — bring a jacket even in summer; stone steps are slippery after rain
- Shuttle buses are the main transport inside the area; private cars must park at the designated interchange

🍺 Tsingtao Beer Museum
