Does Alipay work without a Chinese bank account?
Short answer
Yes. The international version of Alipay registers with a non-Chinese phone number, verifies identity with your passport and binds a Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex or Discover card. No Chinese bank account or mainland phone number is required for everyday payments.
What verification actually asks for
Identity verification wants your passport number and, in most cases, a photo of the photo page. The name on the card must match the name on the passport — this is the single most common reason linking fails.
Do this at home. Completing verification on hotel Wi-Fi the night before an early train is the version of this story that ends badly.
The limits foreign cards hit
- Small transactions are fee-free; larger ones carry roughly a 3% service fee
- Some regions' cards are rejected entirely by one wallet but accepted by the other — try both before assuming your card will not work
- A few services, such as in-app top-ups and some vending machines, still require a mainland-issued card
- Person-to-person transfers to some merchants may be limited until you have a usage history
If linking keeps failing
Try the other wallet first — it is the fastest test. If both reject the card, the cause is usually the issuing country, the card type (some debit cards are declined where credit cards pass), or a mismatch between the cardholder name and the passport.
