Receiving and Sending Packages in China: Hotels, Lockers and Cainiao

Short answer

The easiest way to receive a package in China is to have it sent to your hotel front desk — they sign for you and hold it. Self-pickup routes (Hive Box lockers, Cainiao 驿站 stations) open with an SMS pickup code and therefore need a Chinese phone number. Sending packages out is simple: SF Express (顺丰) counters and couriers take parcels with a Chinese-filled waybill, and hotels will hand parcels to the courier for you.

Lockers (found in apartment and office lobbies) hold parcels free for 18–24 hours, then charge a small storage fee. Cainiao stations — the little shops marked with a cainiao logo in every neighborhood — are more flexible: staff hold parcels for days, and if you show your passport and the code, someone will usually pull it for you even without the app.

Related questions

Can I get a package delivered to my hotel in China?

Yes — the standard method. Use the hotel's Chinese address and its phone number as the contact, put your name as it appears on the booking, and tell the front desk to expect it. Collect with your passport.

Do parcel lockers work without a Chinese phone number?

No — Hive Box lockers open with an SMS code sent to the recipient's number. Without a mainland number, route the parcel to your hotel front desk or use a Cainiao station and ask staff for help showing your passport and tracking details.

Can I ship my luggage to another city instead of carrying it?

Yes — intercity luggage shipping via SF Express or JD Logistics is common and cheap (¥20–60 per suitcase for several hundred kilometers, 1–2 days). Hotels will arrange pickup; address it to your next hotel.

Can I order from Taobao or JD as a foreigner?

Yes — both accept international cards through Alipay or WeChat Pay, and registration supports overseas numbers. Delivery addresses still work best in Chinese characters, and the phone number you list should be one that can receive calls/SMS.

How do I send a package home from China?

SF Express for speed or China Post for economy — both handle international parcels, with customs declarations filled at the counter (bring your passport for ID). For valuables or documents, SF is the safer bet.
