Buying Medicine in China: Pharmacies, OTC Rules and Delivery

Short answer

Pharmacies (药店, green cross sign) are dense in every Chinese city and common minor ailments — headache, diarrhea, colds, allergies — are handled over the counter for ¥10–40. Look for the OTC mark for self-service items; anything else needs a doctor's prescription. Foreign passports work for real-name checks. A heavily restricted list (ephedrine cold medicines and similar) is ID-registered and capped regardless of prescription status.

How pharmacies work

What you can buy without a prescription

The OTC mark on the box is the signal: red OTC (甲类) must be sold from the counter, green OTC (乙类) can sit on open shelves — both are yours without a prescription. Combination cold medicines that contain pseudoephedrine are NOT in this free category — see the restricted list below.

Related questions

Can foreigners buy medicine in China without Chinese ID?

Yes. Ordinary OTC items need no ID at all. For real-name items (like ephedrine-containing cold medicine), your passport is the accepted document — that's what the registration is designed for.

Can I buy antibiotics over the counter?

No. Antibiotics require a doctor's prescription, and pharmacies face real penalties for selling them without one. An internet-hospital online consultation is the quickest legitimate route to an e-prescription.

Can I get medicine delivered to my hotel?

Yes — Meituan, Ele.me and JD Health deliver OTC medicine to hotels in cities, often within 30 minutes. Set the delivery address to the hotel's Chinese address and have it handed to the front desk.

Why can't I find a cold medicine on any delivery app?

Combination cold remedies with ephedrine/pseudoephedrine are banned from all online channels by national regulation — offline pharmacies only, with passport registration and a 2-pack cap. This is deliberate, not a stock issue.

Is my home-country prescription valid in China?

Not directly — Chinese pharmacies can only accept prescriptions issued by licensed Chinese physicians. Bring your medication in original packaging for personal use, or see a clinic in China for a local prescription.
