China visa-free entry for Russian citizens extended to 2027: what the official announcement means for your trip

Russian passport holders can enter China without a visa for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchange or transit — and Russia is the only one of the 50 unilateral visa-free countries whose policy runs until 2027 instead of expiring on 31 December 2026. What the official announcement actually says
China's unilateral visa-free policy allows ordinary passport holders from 50 countries to enter for up to 30 days without a visa. Under the current list, published and maintained by the National Immigration Administration:
For 48 of the 50 countries the policy expires on 31 December 2026.
For Russia the policy has been extended until 2027 — currently the latest end date on the entire list.
Brunei is also listed without a stated expiry date.
Permitted purposes are business, tourism, family visits, exchange and transit. Work, study and journalism still require a visa obtained in advance.
Why the 2027 date matters when you book
Most travel guides written in 2026 quote the 31 December 2026 end date because it applies to most countries. If you plan a spring 2027 trip and rely on one of those guides, you will wrongly conclude you need a visa. The extension is why Russians can book flights and hotels for 2027 today with the same entry rules as today — no visa appointment, no consular fees, no waiting.

The one rule airlines check before boarding
The first checkpoint is not Chinese immigration — it is the airline check-in desk. Staff verify your passport against the current visa-free list and may ask for confirmation of onward travel. A return or onward ticket on your phone is enough; a printed itinerary removes any argument.
240-hour transit is the backup, not the plan
Separately from the unilateral policy, citizens of 57 countries — the United States among them — can use 240-hour visa-free transit when continuing to a third country or region. That route requires a confirmed onward ticket to a third country and applies only through designated ports of entry. For Russian citizens the 30-day unilateral policy is simpler: no third-country ticket needed for a direct trip.
Checklist before you fly
- Ordinary passport, valid for the whole trip.
- Return or onward ticket (airlines may ask at check-in).
- Accommodation you can name at immigration, if asked.
- A payment plan: Chinese retail runs on QR codes — link a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay before departure, and keep some cash as backup.
- Your first night's address entered in the arrival form, as with any visa-free entry.
What could change
Unilateral visa-free policies are extended or amended by announcement, not by contract. The end date for Russia currently reads 2027, but entry rules can be adjusted with little notice.
